A sculpture of the Virgin of Carmen now presides over the fishing pier of Puerto de la Cruz. The image made in bronze is the work of the sculptor Rodrigo Rodríguez. The space where the old crane was located, behind the Casa de las Real Aduana, in the middle of the fishing pier, has been the emblematic place chosen for its installation, thus fulfilling a demand from the fishing community of the northern municipality. The opening ceremony chaired by the Mayor, Lope Afonso, and the Senior Patron of the Fishermen’s Guild of the Great Power of God, Carlos Carrillo, was attended by several members of the municipal corporation, as well as numerous authorities military and civilians. The Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Nivariense, Luís Joaquín Gómez Jaubert, was in charge of the blessing of the venerated image. This action was born from an initiative of the collective of the Fishermen’s Association of Puerto de la Cruz, which has managed to obtain the necessary funds for the creation and installation of the sculpture by popular subscription. For Carlos Carrillo, president of the Brotherhood, “the presence of the image of the patron saint of the sailors inside the Puerto de la Cruz wharf is another reason for pride and joy for many sailors and residents of our municipality.” The bronze image has a height of 1.80 metres and an approximate weight of 500 kilos. It is oriented in the direction of the mouth of the port, on a concrete frame covered with rock one metre high. The smelting of the sculpture has been carried out by the canary workshop Fornax.
