Police seize Komodo dragon for first time in Europe

For the first time ever in Spain, the Civil Guard has seized a Komodo Dragon which was illegally acquired. An operation carried out by the environmental squad, SEPRONA in Cornellá de Llobregat also discovered 20 other live animals, most of them reptiles, including a rattlesnake (Crotalux Atrox) Guns and cartridges were also seized and a 43 year old American man was arrested. He faces prosecution for a crime related to the protection of flora and fauna, another of contraband and a crime of illegal possession of weapons. The investigation began after police received information that a person could illegally possess specimens included in the International Convention of Endangered Species without complying with the legally established requirements.  It was discovered that the American man went regularly to a location where the animals were kept, performing cleaning duties and subsequently throwing the remains of dirty water, material and excrement of the animals that were in the premises into the road. The animals seized included pythons, scorpion, other snakes and various lizards. Three cages also contained mice that served as food for these animals.  The animals that were intervened were placed in the offices of the Barcelona Zoo and the Amphibian and Reptile Recovery Centere of Catalonia (CRARC). As for the two poisonous animals (the rattlesnake and the scorpion) were delivered at the Escola de Natura in Parets del Vallés (Barcelona).
