Puerto de la Cruz has become the first municipality in Spain to implement autocomposting in a tourist establishment. The measure will allow about 70kg of organic matter to be transformed into compost quickly and without the need to resort to large tracts of land. The pilot test of self-manage-ment of organic matter is being carried out in the Tigaiga hotel. This action is aimed at reducing the number of tons that leave the accommodation each year to end up in the Tenerife Environmental Complex (former PIRS). “This is another step forward in the path of sustainability for which the tourist city is becoming known,” said the Mayor, Lope Afonso. Councillor of general services, Ángel Montañés said hotel waste currently corresponds to com-postable organic matter and therefore recoverable for agri-culture and gardening. “This system could self-manage up to 2,500 tons each year, which would have been buried in Arico,” he pointed out. If the pilot scheme proves a success, it will be rolled out to other hotels. This initiative is being tested and aligned with the objectives of the European project Urban Waste, in which Puerto is taking part.
