Last year there were 102,233 traffic accidents with victims in Spain, in which 1,830 people died and 139,162 were injured, of which 9,546 required hospital admission. These figures have been presented by the director general of traffic, Pere Navarro to coincide with the country’s busiest fortnight in which thousands of citizens begin their summer vacations and choose the vehicle for their travel. It means Spain continues with a rate of deaths per million inhabitants of 39, which places it in eighth position in the European Union area, below the average community rate, which is 50. Sr. Navarro said he wanted to draw attention to “the pandemic of traffic accidents and the need to react to a scourge that as a society we cannot afford.” He also recalled “the responsibility that each one of us has, when one of the group has been drinking or consumed some kind of substance and we let them get behind the wheel, or when we allow the driver to use the mobile during driving. We are all res-ponsible and we can all avoid an accident. “ In 2017, six out of ten accidents with victims took place on urban roads, but accidents with fatalities were concentrated in interurban roads. Last year 37 per cent (37,493) of traffic accidents with victims took place on the interurban roads. On these roads, 72 per cent of the fatalities (1,321) occurred, of which 1,013 (77 per cent) were in conventional routes. In the urban roads there were 64,740 accidents with victims, in which 509 people died (28 per cent of the total) and 4,780 were hospitalised with injuries. The vulnerable groups: pedestrians, cyclists and motorists represent 46 per cent of all the deceased. In 2017, 78 cyclists, 359 motorcyclists, 49 mopeds and 351 pedestrians passed away. In one out of every three deaths, drivers tested positive for alcohol and/or illegal drug use. Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Castilla y León, Ga-licia, the Valencian Community and the Basque Country are the communities that have reduced the number of deaths in a traffic accident compared to the previous year.
