Lifting of budget freeze allows increased cleaning for Puerto

Street cleaning and rubbish collection is to be improved in Puerto de la Cruz. Puerto council and the concessionaire of the municipality’s garbage and street cleaning collection services, the Sufi-Tarajal UTE, recently agreed to expand and modify the service contract signed between both entities. “This will allow the continued improvement of the service that has been provided in the municipality,” said a council spokesman. In this way, the concessionaire will receive an increase of 812,660.36 euros per year, 19.32 per cent more than the current price of the contract. Puerto council says it is able to spend the money because of payment of its previous debt and the abandonment there-fore of the Adjustment Plan that gripped the accounts of the municipal coffers. The Mayor, Lope Afonso said increasing the budget was vital and necessary to improve the quality and image of Puerto. The extension of the con-tract, the result of a process of study and search for efficiency, will involve the modification of the fre-quencies of urban waste collection and road cleaning. There will also be an increase in personnel, pro-vision of machinery and vehicles, new collection routes, in addition to an increase in the service on weekends and at night. Head of General Services, Works and Industry, Ángel Montañés, said the increase in hotel occupancy and the consequent increase in waste generation and rubbish in public spaces was justifi-cation enough for the im-provement of this contract.
