Women calling for help because of gender violence have been promised 24-hour urgent attention thanks to a new agreement. The 112 Canary Emergency Service has signed an agreement with the Spanish Red Cross to answer calls diverted from the Telephone Service of Care and Protection for victims of gender violence (ATENPRO) in the Canary Islands. The calls will be automatically diverted if there is a lack of coverage or reception. Mobile terminals given to the women at risk are programmed to call 1-1-2 if this should happen. The service is based on the use of technologies of mobile phone communication and geolocation and enables women victims of domestic violence to make contact 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the Red Cross Centre attended by personnel specifically prepared to give an adequate response to their situation, either by themselves or by mobilising other human and material resources, specific to the client or existing in the community. The terminals that the users receive have a localisation system that transmits these data to the Spanish Red Cross Service Centre. In addition, it allows telephone communi-cation by voice with said centre and in the case of women with hearing impairment, commu-nication is articulated through a text message. The operational rooms of the 1-1-2 must respond and immediately manage these emergency calls, counting with the ATENPRO database of the Red Cross, also informing the NGO about the existence of such calls for coordination and timely effects.
